A 300 meter, 300,000 ton oil tanker on a typical voyage takes about 20 days to travel the 7,000 kilometers from the Middle East to Japan; the contents of such a huge ship represent a mere half day's consumption for the whole of Japan. Equipped with the very latest technology, the tanker is steered by a crew of only 16 to 20. To ensure even greater safety in the case of an emergency or a marine accident, Cosmo Oil has been using a double-hull structure to prevent any oil spillage.

To ensure the stable supply of energy even in an emergency, Japanese oil companies are obliged to stock sufficient oil for 70 days or more consumption, and as an additional reserve the Government holds stocks for 90 days. Cosmo Oil has its own tank in the stock base and cooperates with the Government.More than one week's Japanese oil consumption is stored in the Shirashima Oil Stock Base, offshore from Kitakyushu City. The oil is stored in eight giant storage vessels each with a total length of about 400 meters; the moored vessels are an ideal storage solution for Japan – a country with only a small flat land mass and showcases safe and environmentally friendly storage technology.
